ACADEMIC TEAM AMONG THE NATION'S BEST. When two national qualifying teams were unable to meet the travel agenda, Trask bubbled up to be among the top 12 finalists in the College Option Foundation's academic bowl. As a result, SFC Quiles escorted five of our brightest to George Mason University vic Dulles Airport, Washington, D.C. area last weekend. In four head-to-head competitions with JROTC academic teams from around the world, the Titan contingent lost the first round; allowed Pickens, SC, to gain a 4th quarter, come-from-behind victory against them in the second round; won the third round; and, were soundly defeated by the meet's second place finishers in the fourth and final session. While the team would liked to have done better, the experience was phenomenal and all are looking forward to the next round of academic competition.

IT's NOT FORT MACON: Twenty young people stood to be disappointed when the bus for the Fort Macon (90 miles distant)wouldn't start. With the help of the Athletic Director and some flexibility, however, the outing was salvaged by hiking the trail system at Carolina Beach State Park instead. If anyone held a residual grudge, all was forgiven over a late lunch at Golden Corral. More pictures will follow once release forms are in.

TITANS CLOSE OUT JCLC/CAMP SEASON: A total of 29 Titan Cadets completed either/or Camp Lee Ford summer camp (17 Cadets) or Oak Ridge Military Academy (12 Cadets)JCLC during June. Highlights were total rappel participation (both encampments and including the reluctant but persevering Mathew Bowen)and (1) Lee Ford: total completition of the "flat-lander defiant" hike UP Hanging Rock (VA), tours of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA, the Booker T. Washington National Shrine near Rocky Mount (VA) and VMI; (2) ORMA: a one-sided Dodgeball Championship, a kick in the teeth during Cadet Idol and numerous operational and performance successes at JCLC including the selection of Trask Cadet Cory Love as one of only six Camp Honor Graduates. Pictures to follow.

ACADEMIC TEAM EARNS MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT: In the fall of 2005, Trask was competitively selected to represented the 4th Brigade (consisting of 276 JROTC programs throughout the Carolinas and Virginia) to participate in Cadet Command’s inaugural Worldwide Symposium on JROTC. That we repeated that feat last year was an added honor. This year, however, the competition was reorganized into a two-tiered, internet based academic competition among all 1645 JROTC worldwide. After a credible showing on the first phase, the difficulty of phase two had the local team resigned to “also ran” status. As it turns out, however, the Trask effort placed us among the top schools in the Brigade and among the top 38 around the world. As a result, Trask now becomes one of only four (4) of 1645 JROTC programs that will have attended all three symposiums. Primary team members expected to attend the VMI (Lexington, VA) conference are Justin Fleshman, Richard Gerganous, Cory Love and Keith Simonson. Team alternates, and potential attendees, are Josh Lee and Andrew Lindner.
